![]() ![]() Rather than all the signal function and parameter selection switches, the touchscreen display would display all the necessary “buttons” needed to configure any particular signal-generation function. In place of a physical numeric keypad, the display, itself, would provide a virtual keypad ( Figure 1). Instead, I decided to use a TFT LCD display with touchscreen capability. Many of these would be needed for the various signal outputs, and a common alphanumeric LCD display would need six more. The ESP32 is a versatile MCU, but it has only 23 GPIO lines available. The only feasible display would be an LCD with enough rows to simultaneously display all the adjustable parameters for a given generator function.Ī physical keypad and all the other necessary switches would have required a lot of wiring and used a lot of the ESP32’s GPIO lines. ![]() ![]() Also, there would need to be several switches to select among the various signal types, and additional switches to select which of the many parameters were being set. To enter such a wide range of numbers-some integers, some floating point-it seemed like there was no choice but to use a numeric keypad of some type. With so many different types of signals-covering a wide range in terms of period/frequency/width/delay-several parameters must be entered and displayed. Both an active high and a complementary output are provided for each of the three phases.īefore discussing each of these generators in detail, I’d like to describe what I settled on for a user interface. This provides a user-adjustable frequency, user-adjustable pulse width and dead time. Each individual pulse is adjustable in width and delay time with respect to pulse #1.Ĥ) A 3-phase PWM (pulse width modulation) generator. All three pulses would share a common, user-adjustable period. This is handled by the ESP32 itself, using the PLL-controlled I 2S function block.Ģ) A square-wave clock signal covering 100kHz to 100MHz. I wanted a wide range of signal amplitudes up to 18V P-P with an adjustable DC offset capability.Ģ) An accurate, adjustable DC voltage reference in the ±4.0V range.Īll the other signals of interest to me were digital signals of one form or another:ġ) A square-wave clock signal covering the frequency range of 7Hz to 3MHz. USEFUL SIGNAL OPTIONSīecause many of my projects are mixed signal (as the name of my column suggests), I wanted to generate both analog and digital signal types. It was still in use occasionally when I decided to design this more ambitious signal generator project. ![]() This was accomplished using a highly specialized timer chip, the AM9513, and a tiny NXP (formerly Motorola) 68HC05 microcontroller (MCU). But I still run into situations where I need a variety of different signal generator functions for design and troubleshooting purposes.įor any readers old enough to have read Circuit Cellar issue 78 back in January, 1997, I wrote an article, “Pulse’05 Pulse Generator.” This project generated a clock and two separate, synchronized pulses with a wide range of period/width/delay times. Now, I don’t personally do such demanding work as to require fancy signal generators with professional specifications. Before I retired from Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia, Canada), I had access to some professional signal and pulse generators for both my work-related and personal projects. Since then, I’ve been using it in Wi-Fi projects, some of which have been described in subsequent Circuit Cellar articles.įor this month’s article, I decided to take another look at the ESP32’s unique peripheral blocks, with an eye on building a multipurpose signal generator. ![]() ![]() I can already see in Onedrive on my desktop 'tests' that are synced or not synced and no idea what is going on with them. edit - maybe I'd get used to it but given I may not even need word/excel/onenote at all on this new device, I probably put it off doh. I'd always be downloading a saved copy of that spreadsheet to be safe from a cloud cock up. Once its 'only' on Outlook I lose all control over the file, it feels, dangerous. Maybe I am in the wrong mood to be looking at it, been a shitty week so throwing on goofy shit on top is not helping. I don't even know if there are non web based versions of this stuff anymore but if 365 is all looking like what the free stuff does in Outlook, ugh, I am fucked. I'd say the same for Excel, it 'works' but I am not sure I'd trust it to not inadvertently do something if I clicked the wrong button - well, that and you lose about 15% of the screen for web browser is certainly annoying. I don't see a way to import the current file so that would really be a cock blocker but, call me old, I just don't even trust what it is or isn't doing. I just did some dicking around so clearly not a 'review' but Outlook in this format is really clunky, could be operator error. Definitely more feature=-rich than Google Sheets, which is the other 800 lb gorilla in the room. You're just stuck requiring Internet access, as you noted. Obviously doesn't support anything like VBA Macros, so would be insufficient for an accountant or finance professional, but would do just fine for 99% of home users, including small business owners. I had access to O365 for free from school, but I still used the free version of OneNote since it did the job and didn't want to install duplicate apps.Įxcel Online works really well, yd. Is the version any different? The free version that came with Windows is what got me through college when I went back to school in 2015. ![]() ![]() OneNote always seems to install itself whenever I do a fresh install of Windows 10. Buying a ticket on the upgrade train for Office for personal use is incredibly cheap given they allow it on so many different devices (and mobile devices) at one time. Relying on it for a "very important" spreadsheet is asking for trouble in the future. This is a very complex piece of software that is now 15 years old (released November 3, 2006). I'm not sure if it's just not advertised or if they've changed to a new set of software.Īnd I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Office 2007 has not received security updates since 2017, leaving any system with this software installed vulnerable to exploitation. My version comes with Access and Publisher, but I don't see that listed on the current offering. The personal plan for Microsoft 365 upgrades you to 1 TB (up to 6 TB with the family plan) of OneDrive storage plus the downloadable versions of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote (non-Windows Store version). Is that app genuinely free, should I search out the 2016 variant (which only seems to be places like TechRadar or probably dodgier sites)? I can muscle through with my antique Word and I only genuinely use one spreadsheet (albeit a very important one).Īny free account includes 2 GB of OneDrive storage, Teams for personal use, Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, OneNote (both the web version and the Windows Store version), To Do, Forms Online, Power Automate, Sway, Skype, some optional "family safety" to block adult sites from users of child accounts, and the actual webmail. If I open what is built in on my wife's Go3, it immediately pops up a 'start free trial' or 'buy Microsoft 365' and if I cancel that I see I can apparently use Office until the 28th (4 days from now). Can I actually get that for free legitimately - it isn't in the Microsoft store in a 2016 variant that I gather is a free one but there does seem to be an App but it doesn't mention a price so the app is free? I have been using 2007 for eons (it is a bit clunky for setting up sharing it across devices and I frankly have no idea how that really works). Then I stumbled across something about OneNote being free and thought, what the heck. And that is for 6 users on all their devices I believe well I really only have 2 users with 3 devices each (desktop/notebook/tablet) so would be good to go. Now I wouldn't use the others but I would pick up newer presumably slicker versions that would always be updated and kinda thought, interesting. ![]() I went to the the Microsoft website, just curious about how much something like that now would sell for and they have Microsoft 365 that I could get all those and more for 100 bucks a year. As part of all my new builds or notebook/tablet software loadouts I always grab my handy dandy legit bought Microsoft Office cd of 2007 and install Excel/Word and Onenote. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jaikoz Audio Tagger provides a great package for managing your audio collection, giving you access to precise searching parameters while also making your tracks look neater in any music player. I’ve had tracks that I thought had the right title, only to run them thru SongKong and discover they were misidentified. It’s like employing a bank of copy editors to research, enter and cross-check the metadata of your music files. While I’ve only used it’s most basic features, SongKong is incredibly flexible & powerful. It also utilizes MusicBrainz & Discogs databases, ensuring more accurate results. It’s a slick and easy to use program that listens to your songs using Acoustid, and finds matches, even when they have no information. Recently I’ve been using a program called SongKong. What it can’t do is find and write the metadata, so the tracks remain unknown. Fortunately Roon is able to resolve most of these issues and reorganizes the discs into a single album and re-numbers the tracks. In many cases a single album shows in Roon as being composed of 20+ discs, all with a single track, and all tracks with the same track #. Of the hundreds of music tracks, none have metadata. ![]() I’ve got a fair number of compilation discs made by a friend, which I ripped to my music server. "It's not an ingredient that is added to sunscreen, and likely, occurs as a contaminant, a byproduct of manufacturing, or in the production of another raw material, like alcohol or aloe vera," explains Laura Cohen, M.D., a board-certified dermatologic surgeon serving as President and CEO of CoLabs International. So how did benzene end up in sunscreen then? ![]() Current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) literature suggests that benzene exposure can happen involuntarily around you on a daily basis, but Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials have imposed a limit of two parts per million (2 ppm) in all pharmaceuticals, including sunscreen, to ensure it doesn't become an active ingredient. The chemical is also found in gasoline and is discharged into the air via exhaust pipes as well as in volcanic eruptions and forest fires. Benzene is typically harnessed in manufacturing plastics, synthetic fibers, dyes, detergents, as well as pesticides and also within glues and other adhesives as a solvent. While many manufacturers (including Johnson & Johnson) have issued recalls, you may be wondering if your bottle of sunscreen is affected by benzene contamination - and why exactly it's a risk to your health in the first place.īenzene is a highly flammable and volatile chemical compound that can be traced back to crude oil, gasoline and cigarette smoke, where it's a byproduct of the refining process and burnt tobacco and tar. And yet benzene contamination seems to be a more common health issue than ever expected, as independent testing by Valisure, a pharmaceutical analytical services company, published the results of its study citing more than 50 contaminated sunscreen products. How did benzene - a chemical compound that's naturally found in crude oil and gasoline - end up in sunscreen? Experts and manufacturers were shocked to find it in sample tests: It's not an intended ingredient in any sunscreen formula or production process, regardless of the brand or manufacturer. Customers were asked to dispose of or request a refund for the affected bottles immediately in "an abundance of caution" while the company investigated how a known carcinogenic chemical known as benzene worked its way into these aerosol products. ![]() No matter what happens before or after, the motion of the trigger to move the sear off that hammer notch is commonly termed creep. A correct trigger has those angles such that the hammer must move ever so slightly farther to the rear to release. The sear is held into that notch which measures in the 10 of thousandths of an inch, by the sear spring with the engagement angles such that the sear tends to stay engaged. The sear engagement in a simple hammer and sear trigger system is a narrow notch usually on the hammer. Some trigger designs have more travel than others and can't safely be tuned up to reduce the travel distance.the key is not so much the amount of travel but rmostly to have it smooth and even throughout that stage. I would call a hair trigger one that has both a very light pull weight and also very little travel. The term hair trigger is like the term creep. Not a textbook definition, but pretty common when some folks talk guns. Usually it will be called creep on a "bad" trigger, one that is rough or has a lot of travel. Apply nice even pressure up to the point of that nice crisp snap. It's also many times likened to feeling a glass rod break. The point after the initial take-up is gone, you've got tension on the trigger, and the trigger actually starts moving itself to disengage itself from the sear.Ī well tuned trigger should have a nice smooth "travel" that has a fairly even pull weight and no rough or gritty feel to it. Going by what Alpo posted (the "proper" terminology).Ĭreep would be what he defined as the travel portion of the trigger movement. It was so light, that weight of a hair landing on it would set it off. I've always heard that a "hair trigger" was one that had an extremely light pull. There are things called "trigger stops", that prevent overtravel. Continuing to move can cause you to pull the gun off target. You want the trigger to break (that's what it's called when the hammer releases - the trigger "breaks") and then stop. Preferably, you don't want any overtravel. ![]() That's the distance the trigger moves after the shot has been fired.
